Medical Conditions Associated With Autism

            Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that begins early in life and is accompanied by social communication problems and repetitive behaviors. 

         ASD is a spectrum disorder with a wide clinical presentation, ranging from severe cases with almost no communication and speech to high - functioning cases with special abilities and milder involvement.

         Social communicative problems and repetitive behaviors which are the main symptoms of autism can be accompanied by medical and behavioral conditions. 

         It is known that wide range of individuals diagnosed with autism have an additional medical conditions. Medical conditions associated with autism can be ranked as such as ; 

1) Gastrointestinal Problems 

       It has been known for along time that children with ASD have gastrointestinal problems. the number of children with chronic constipation is noticeably higher than typically developing children. 

* Eating a limited variety of food

* Low fibre comsumption

* Low liquid consumption 

* Medicines 

* Refuse or postpone pooping may cause constipation issue

2) Disrupted Sleep 

       Many individuals with ASD live problems with falling a sleep , not sleeping enough hours , waking in the middle of the night - and does not sleep again. These issues may be the reason of increasing behavior problems, degreasing learning skills. Also effect the whole family's life quality. 

       Discontinuous ,distrupted sleep may  be related with gastrointestinal issues. Having abdominal pain may distrupt sleeping patterns. What can we do ?

* Having  routines before sleeping ( baht, brushing teeth.....)

* Setting  comfortable room conditions 

* Arranging sleeping times throughout the day 

* Providing suitable circumstances for spending energy 

* Sleeping training may help 

3) Feeding Issues 

       Unfortunately most common point about individuals with ASD is restricted feeding. Color, smell, texture of food is significative. Getting them to taste new foods can be really hard. On the other hand chronic over eating may lead to obesity.

       Restricted feeding and obesity are boht the problems should be solved by the help of behavioural therapists and psychologists. 

4) Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder 

      Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that includes symptoms like being restless ,having troubles with concentrating . Symptoms of ADHD include ;

* Short attention

* Fidgeting 

* Acting without thinking

* Impulsivity

       ADHD and ASD in common causes problems in daily life. This condition may effect the learning skills of our child. Primarily if you are suspicious of ADHD , a specialist may help you about the diagnosis. Treatment may include behavioral analysis and strategies ,in some cases medical treatment may be recommended .

5) Obsessive Compulsive Disorder 

     Obsessive  Compulsive Disorder ( OCD) is a mental health condition that you recurring thoughts and repetitive behaviors that you can not control. It is known that OCD is most common among the individuals who are diagnosed with ASD then general population. It is also hard to distinguish OCD symptoms from characteristics of ASD. 

     If you feel suspicious about that your child have OCD symptoms additional to ASD symptoms you should see a mental health provider and have a detailed information about behaviour changing methods.
